Why Africans don't read

I was searching something online today and came across this debate that was posted online in 2005 on News BBC site. I am intrigued that the conversation about reading in Africa has been going on for a longtime. Many of the response were very interested. One thing that I found interesting is that no one talked about teaching children how to read in the schools.  I would like to continue this conversation. What is your thought? Continue this conversation by responding to the questions below. You may want to read the original conversation.

1. Does Africa lack a reading culture?
2. Why do you think Africa lacks a reading culture?
3. What do you think can be done to create a reading culture?
