Literacy for life program
“No matter how busy you may think you are, you must find time for reading, or surrender yourself to self-chosen ignorance.” Atwood H. Townsend
Literacy for life program works with local communities and schools to promote reading and provide access to books in the schools. The program is aimed at encouraging families to create time for at least 15 minutes leisure reading time in the homes with children daily. For our radio program we read for 15 minutes from a book and discuss the book with our audience. We also provide tips for literacy each time we engage in with our audience. With our program we engage our audience once a week with a book. At our literacy for life centers in schools and communities, we form reading circles and do read aloud with children and students for at least 30 minutes a day. We also support individuals who are challenged with reading and writing abilities. We take reading to the communities through our mobile reading outreach to homes and churches. Literacy for life improves lives by engaging pupils, students and adults in literacy skills- reading, writing, and speaking. It provides opportunity for children and adults to listen and engage in reading books especially from African authors and beyond. Literacy for life builds bridges of hope through literacy. Literacy for life is a part of Reading Drive for Africa organization that works on promoting literacy in families, schools and communities in Africa. This program is focused on providing children and adults an opportunity to engage in literacy activities in daily life. Many people want to read but have no time, books, or do not know how. |
